Alien Theories and Local Sightings
Located about 27 kilometers from Mahaoya town along the Manampitiya road, Danigala Rock stands in the Kandegama area — a mysterious and striking formation. Also known as the “Alien Mountain” and “Stargate of King Ravana,” this distinctive horseshoe-shaped inselberg was sculpted by centuries of natural erosion and geological processes.
The summit of Danigala features a broad, flat plateau. Along the outer rim of the rock’s curved edge is a bare, vegetation-free strip, contrasting with the green-covered center. This unusual formation — nicknamed “UFO Rock” — has become the focus of many theories.
In 2017, the fall of meteor fragments in nearby Aralaganwila made national news, sparking renewed interest in the region. Locals frequently report strange lights in the night sky, often hovering near Danigala or circling nearby peaks — further fueling the alien connection (Lankadeepa, 2017). Some claim the vegetation-free arc is unnatural, suggesting it may have been used by beings from beyond Earth.
Ancient Heritage (2nd Century BCE)
Long before modern myths took hold, Danigala was a place of spiritual significance. Caves along its slopes show clear signs of having been used by meditating Buddhist monks, with visible man-made drip ledges and Brahmi inscriptions dating as far back as the 2nd century BCE (Sumanarathna et al., 2020).
One of the most fascinating findings comes from Chithra Lena Cave. On the cave’s left wall, a well-preserved petroglyph panel features symbols and imagery strikingly similar to those found in India’s Edakkal Cave. The carved panel spans approximately 25 feet by 16 feet in a protected rock passage.
What the Symbols Reveal: Most carvings include human-like forms, peacocks, dogs, plants, ladders, bows and arrows, and geometric shapes. Some researchers believe these unique “bind code” patterns could be ancient astronomical notations, pointing to an advanced level of symbolic thinking by the cave dwellers.
Legend of King Ravana
Deeply entwined with Sri Lankan folklore is the legend of King Ravana. Some suggest Danigala to have been a prominent landing zone for his mythical flying machine, the "Dandumonara" (also known as the Pushpaka Vimana).
These tales link Danigala to epic legends from the Ramayana, reinforcing its reputation as a potential ancient "stargate" or spaceport. The perfectly shaped semicircle plateau is often cited by believers as evidence of an artificial landing strip for these ancient aircraft.
